Encoder systems are a key component in both control and measuring systems, and are found in many industries.

The component parts are usually very reliable, and will give years of service, but inevitably they do fail due to both mechanical and electrical causes, and at this stage it is often a cause of serious downtime while the encoder is replaced with an original type, or an alternative product sourced, especially if the original item is no longer available.

Encoder systems also require a control device to recognise and interpolate the signals from the encoder, and this is sometimes the source of the problem rather than the encoding device, and so we are often able to check the whole encoder system while still within the machine or process to establish the errant device.

Checks can be made on output signal type, and line counts (pulses per revolution), as well as the amplitude and phasing of the signals.
